The Heart of Giving #2: A New Stevenson
Every community reaches a point when it must decide what kind of future it is willing to build. For our region, that moment is now. Stevenson Memorial Hospital has been part of our story for nearly a century, beginning with the founding gift from Theodore P. Loblaw, offered “in honour of his grandparents William and Elizabeth Stevenson.” That act of generosity set in motion a legacy of community-driven health care that has carried us through generations of growth, change, and challenge.
But today, we stand at a crossroads. The hospital built in 1964 no longer reflects the needs or the size of the communities it serves. Places like Adjala-Tosorontio, Alcona, Alliston, Angus, Baxter, Beeton, Bond Head, Borden, Bradford West Gwillimbury, Colgan, Cookstown, Egbert, Essa, Everett, Friday Harbour, Gilford, Innisfil, Loretto, Mono, Mulmer, New Tecumseth, Primrose, Rosemont, Schomberg, Shelburne, Stroud, Thornton, Tottenham and Utopia to name most have grown exponentially.
Our hospital has not kept pace. The result is a facility stretched beyond its limits, serving more than 75,000 people in a building designed for a different era.
We cannot wait any longer.
Today, we face a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a modern hospital that will finally match the strength and size of our community. The total redevelopment and equipment cost is $405 million, with $80 million as the local share. That $80 million is our responsibility. No one else will do it for us.
As CEO and Board Chair, we see every day how urgently this project is needed. We see it in the families waiting for care. We see it in the staff doing extraordinary work in outdated spaces. And we see it in the early donors who have already stepped forward—people who understand that strong health care is the backbone of a strong community.
But the truth is simple: this campaign will only succeed if every one of us steps forward. Collectively, we are more than 75,000 individuals—and the only ones who use the hospital are individuals, when we are hurt, sick, giving birth or at end-of-life. This is not someone else’s responsibility. It is ours.
This is our Time. Our Opportunity. Our Responsibility. Our Shared Legacy.
