Not every hospital experience leaves a patient filled with deep gratitude, but for Cecilie, a recent patient at Stevenson Memorial Hospital (SMH), that was precisely her experience. What began as a terrifying night evolved into a journey of healing and compassion, highlighting the staff’s unwavering dedication at SMH.
Cecilie’s ordeal began on September 21st with a sudden, explosive sensation in her chest, making it hard to breathe. “It felt like a massive weight was crushing me,” she recalls. “I looked at my husband and just said, ‘9-1-1.’” The ambulance arrived swiftly, and as they transported her to SMH, Cecilie felt a mix of fear and uncertainty about what was happening to her. Upon arrival, the team quickly stabilized her condition. After a thorough examination, she was diagnosed with a collapsed lung and placed under the care of Dr. Ko, whose reassuring presence helped alleviate some of her anxiety about her situation.
Cecilie’s recovery proved challenging as she returned for follow-up X-rays. “Within a week, it was clear my lung wasn’t expanding as expected,” she explains, her voice tinged with concern. A CT scan revealed small tears in the upper part of her lung, requiring her to stay at SMH for several days to receive appropriate care and monitoring. Throughout her stay, Cecilie was continuously impressed by the kindness and professionalism of the entire medical team. “Dr. Keshoofy and Dr. Ko were both incredible,” she says. “Dr. Keshoofy was thorough and caring, ensuring I understood every step of my treatment, and Dr. Ko’s kindness impacted my overall experience.
Cecilie’s gratitude extends beyond the physicians; she equally appreciates the entire hospital staff. “It didn’t matter what role they played—nurses, doctors, cleaning staff, dietary staff—everyone was exceptional,” she emphasizes. She describes an environment where the dedication of SMH staff transcends the limitations of their undersized facility. “Sometimes the hallways are filled with patients due to limited space, but the staff makes do with grace and dignity. They ensure respect for everyone, even when the conditions are less than ideal.”
Her experience shines a light on the strain faced by SMH’s resources. “The halls are packed with equipment, and the hospital is bursting at the seams,” she says, noting the visible hustle and bustle of the environment. “But no one lets it affect their work. I’ve been to other hospitals, but Stevenson is unique in its commitment to patient care.” Cecilie marvels at the consistency of care, noting that she encountered only kindness and professionalism, whether it was late at night or during peak hours. “The staff maintained their composure and compassion, creating a comforting atmosphere even amidst the chaos.”
As her time at SMH drew to a close, Cecilie was deeply moved by the connections she had formed. “When I was leaving, I wanted every staff member to know how special they are. Nurses who weren’t even on shift came by to wish me well,” she says, her voice filled with appreciation. “This hospital is exceptional—no one is there just for a job. They genuinely care about the patients and this community.” Each interaction solidified her belief that the staff at SMH are genuinely dedicated to the healing process.
Cecilie’s journey reminds us that healing extends beyond medical treatment at SMH. It encompasses the human connections forged in times of vulnerability and fear. Her story is a powerful testament to the commitment and compassion of a team that works tirelessly under challenging conditions to serve their community.
As Stevenson Memorial Hospital prepares for future redevelopment, Cecilie’s heartfelt words call us to support this remarkable institution and its vital role in our lives. “This hospital deserves recognition for its incredible work,” she asserts. It’s a lifeline for many in our community, and we must do everything possible to ensure it continues to thrive.” In sharing her experience, Cecilie honours the exceptional care she received and emphasizes the importance of community support for our local healthcare providers.
