Ernest Cumberland Elementary School Play Day Raises Over $6,000 for Stevenson Memorial Hospital Foundation

[New Tecumseth, ON – June 29, 2022] – The Stevenson Memorial Hospital Foundation (SMHF) received a generous boost to the Because of you, we can redevelopment Campaign with a donation of $6,382.33 from Ernest Cumberland Elementary School.

On June 17, the students of Ernest Cumberland hosted a Play Day & Fundraising Challenge in support of SMHF. For a minimum donation of $2 dollars, students were invited to participate in a fun day of hospital-themed games and challenges. Donations were accepted at the school and online.

“The students were really motivated to do this”, says Rebecca Munro, Community and Corporate  Giving Officer, SMHF, “We are absolutely thrilled that they were able to surpass their fundraising goal and raise so much in support of community health care. They have done an outstanding job and have created a great blueprint for other schools to follow suit.”

This was the inaugural year for the Play Day Fundraising Challenge and the school hopes it will inspire other schools, agencies and community groups to do something similar.

“Stevenson Memorial Hospital Foundation is grateful to have community supporters like Ernest Cumberland,” says Mary Thomas, CEO, SMHF. “Because of their generous gift, these students are helping to transform Stevenson. Increased patient rooms, doubling the size of our Surgical Services Department, and enhancing our Birthing Unit are all examples of just some of the improvements made possible by our community partners. Thank you, Ernest Cumberland, for making these changes possible.”

The Because of you, we can Campaign is the largest campaign in the SMHF’s history, supporting the redevelopment of Stevenson Memorial Hospital. The hospital’s redevelopment plan includes a revitalized Emergency Department, doubling the square footage of the hospital and tripling the amount of parking space. Refreshed outpatient rooms, birthing suites and laboratory space are also included in the plans. With an Emergency Department built to manage 7,000 visits a year that currently manages close to 40,000 per year, along with a growing population in south Simcoe and surrounding communities, this redevelopment is needed today and for future generations.
