Alectra Donates $10,000 for Critical Equipment to Help Impact Patients and Staff at Stevenson Memorial Hospital

[New Tecumseth, ON – February 28, 2023] – The Stevenson Memorial Hospital Foundation (SMHF) is pleased to announce that Alectra Inc., through the AlectraCARES Community Support Program, has generously donated $10,000 towards the purchase of a Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA) pump for Stevenson Memorial Hospital (SMH).

The AlectraCARES Community Support Program provides funding to charities and non-profit organizations that support the most vulnerable in its service territory. Through the program, Alectra has become a long-time supporter of Stevenson Memorial Hospital Foundation, generously contributing over $47,000 since 2017 for various hospital initiatives, including the purchase of vital equipment.

“Our AlectraCARES Community Support Program centres around empowering and enhancing the quality of life in communities that we serve,” said Brian Bentz, President and CEO, Alectra Inc. “We’re proud to continue our support of the Stevenson Memorial Hospital Foundation as they improve the health care system across New Tecumseth with state-of-the-art equipment.”

The PCA pump allows patients to control the administration of pain medicine within prescribed limits determined by their doctor. Patients can push a button and a dose is delivered. This impacts patients as it provides independence, and eliminates the need to wait for health care workers to help with pain management. Allowing patients to manage their pain in a safe and controlled way, allows medical staff to attend to urgent patient needs while ensuring other patients using the controlled PCA pump are momentarily handling their symptoms. This equipment is critical in an environment suffering from labour shortages where resources must be used efficiently and effectively to ensure timely and safe patient care.

“Raising funds for medical equipment remains a vital role here at Stevenson Memorial Hospital Foundation.  Revenue generated from donations cover the cost of equipment not funded by the government.  The needs of our hospital, for new equipment or upgrades, is constant in order to provide quality health care in our community,” says Mary Thomas, CEO, SMHF. “We very much appreciate the on-going support we receive from Alectra. It helps to ensure that we continue to provide quality health care to our patients, and our health care workers have the vital tools necessary to provide care to those within the community.”

The Because of you, we can Campaign is the largest campaign in the SMHF’s history, supporting the redevelopment of Stevenson Memorial Hospital. The hospital’s redevelopment plan includes a revitalized Emergency Department, doubling the square footage of the hospital and revitalizing parking for visitors. Refreshed outpatient rooms, birthing suites and laboratory space are also included in the plans.  With an Emergency Department built to manage 7,000 visits a year that currently manages close to 40,000 per year, along with a growing population in south Simcoe and surrounding communities, this redevelopment is needed today and for future generations.
